If you haven't heard of boudoir photography for brides at this point, you must be living under (a preferably princess-cut, multi-carat) rock. "[It's] pretending to be a Victoria's Secret model for a day," says Natick-based photographer Sara Sun. True, it can take a lot of guts to strip down to your skivvies in front of the lens, but the experience, and end result, is well worth the courage it takes to show up.

Most of Sun's clients are brides-to-be looking to present their groom with a special, tantalizing gift, but as it turns out, the brides themselves often get the gift of the rewarding, often liberating, experience. "I think there is a bit of a thrill doing something that is outside of the ordinary for them," says Sun. "And it is so rewarding for me to have people tell me that they usually do not like how they look in photographs, but love the ones I took!"

Typically, brides-to-be bring 4-5 "outfits" which can include lingerie, bras, panties, corsets- whatever they feel most comfortable in. Subliminally sexy attire, including an oversized mens button-down (maybe one of your groom's) or his favorite team jersey, make for playful images as well (high heels, garters, jewelry and accessories add a sassy touch!). Before she starts snapping, Sun will take a look at what the clients bring and recommend pieces she knows will pop with the background or merge well into shots she has in mind.

Professional hair and make-up is part of Sun's $380 package (which includes an hour-long session and a black leather album she calls "The Little Black Book"). Shot at the exquisite Hotel Marlowe in Cambridge, Sun says the red velvet couches and leopard print rugs in the understated, elegant, unique rooms make it the perfect setting for boudoir photography.

Once the session is in full swing, most brides tend to relax and start having fun. "My shooting style is more about making sure that the poses and expressions look real and flattering. Some poses are more pinup-style and so, of course those will look posed, but it is cute and I love that style as well," says Sun. "Sometimes I go for a 'Marilyn Monroe laughing in the sheets' look and that is one of my favorite looks because it is so natural and so sexy." The more comfortable a bride is, the better the shots will be, but Sun laughs, "humor and a glass of champagne doesn't hurt." Two weeks after the session, images are proofed online and then the client selects 12 images for the album. The album has one image on the cover and 12 matted 5x7 prints that are professionally retouched by Sun.

While she's busy shooting weddings and portraits, Sun is thriving at this naughty but nice addition to her business. "I love boudoir sessions," she says. "The transformation after hair and makeup and clothing is so much fun to watch."

*Mention Beantown Bride when you book your session and receive 8 additional 5x7 prints for a total of 20 prints in your album! Call 617-833-0660 to reserve a session at Sublime Photo's annual January 16th boudoir session at Hotel Marlowe in Cambridge, MA.

A friend of mine got married last year worked with this photographer, she is based in Natick and her photos turned out beautiful. Now, I'm defiantly going to call her for this Jan special. Thanks for posting this article, it put things in perspective for me.
