When choosing a design for your wedding cake, there are countless factors to consider. Do you want it to coordinate with your dress, or do you want it to match the decor of the venue? Should you go for something classic or whimsical? What flavor will appeal to everyone, and what colors should you use?
These are just a few of the questions Jenny Williamson helps couples answer when she meets with them to talk about cake designs. As the owner of Jenny's Wedding Cakes, her home-based business located in Amesbury MA, Jenny knows that couples have a lot to think about when it comes to deciding on a wedding cake. That's why she takes a personal approach to guiding couples through the process.
The first step is to meet with the couple one-on-one. "We leave lots of time to discuss all aspects of the wedding," Jenny says. "Before we look at pictures, we'll talk about what kind of feel the bride and groom want to put across, whether it's fun or formal, and whether they want to include natural elements. Then we go to the pictures."
For brides who may not have pictures- and it's not necessary that they do- Jenny's portfolio is available for them to look at. "Brides don't really have to bring anything with them to the consultation. If they want to bring samples of colors or special fabrics, a ribbon, or flower, they can, but they don't have to. We can be really flexible." That's good news for couples still in early stages of wedding planning.
Based on the information Jenny gets from the couple, she does some sketches and tries to come up with unique designs for all of her different clients. And although it's possible for her to recreate a cake that's been featured in a magazine, Jenny often suggests ways to customize the cake so that the couple add their own personality to it.
Some of the most common requests Jenny gets are for vintage-inspired cakes and sugar flowers, which happen to be one of her specialties. Other emerging trends that she has noticed include the use of peacock feathers as well as the colors in the feathers, gold and silver along with other metallics, and embellishments such as crystals or gemstones. She has also been asked to prepare smaller cake items, such as cupcakes and petit fours, that are displayed on the dessert table alongside the wedding cake.
"We also do a lot of groom's cakes," Jenny says. "They're usually totally different from the wedding cake, and we can do them as a surprise for the groom or work directly with the groom to design it." Replicas of poker tables, Gillette Stadium, a Rolex watch, and even a sea bass are just some examples of groom's cakes Jenny has made.
No doubt her background in art serves her well when it comes to creating cakes. "I always painted and sculpted," Jenny says. She developed a love for cooking early on, too, and started a catering business at a young age. Eventually she started doing desserts for rest, and after a friend asked Jenny to do her wedding cake, she knew she found her passion.
Jenny's Cakes has won numerous awards throughout the Boston wedding industry. Her dedication to providing her clients with a high level of service and personal attention is a testament to her business. Jenny not only designs the cakes, makes them, but she does the deliveries. "It really about making that personal connections, " she says.

In a word, Sarah Rush and Donald Cavicchi wanted a purely Boston wedding. The bride and groom, who live in Framingham, chose to have the ceremony and reception on August 29, 2009 in the Washburn Pavilion at the Museum of Science. Situated on the Charles River, the space easily accommodated their 200 guests and afforded stunning views of the Boston skyline, including landmarks such as the CITGO sign, Fenway Park lights, and Prudential Tower.
In keeping with a summery vibe, the flowers and invitations were chartreuse green. The cake, from Something Sweet by Michelle, and Sarah's dress, a strapless A-line Carolina Herrera gown, incorporated a mix of champagne and ivory. Music played a big role in the event, as Donald is a musician. In lieu of table numbers, the couple used rock concerts they attended while dating. All the paper products, from the invitations and menus to the favor boxes and chair ribbons, were designed and created by Sarah.

What is amazing about that sky is that it would not have been like that had it not rained all day. Just goes to show that rain does not spoil a wedding!

Stacey Souza and Doug Mullen, both realtors from Barnstable, love Christmas and every year need the "perfect tree." For Stacey, the annual tree search turned proposal was an unexpected gift. "I had no clue. It was really romantic and absolutely perfect!"
The couple was married on May 22, 2009 at Our Lady of Hope Chapel, a cozy Cape favorite where Stacey's sister also married. Stacey wore a strapless, silk gown, adorned with billowy pickups and carried a simple bouquet of pink tinged peonies. Doug donned a classic black tuxedo with an ivory vest and tie to match the bride's dress. Bouquets of multicolored gerbera daises complemented the bridesmaids' rhubarb pink chiffon dresses from J. Crew. For the reception, All About Flowers transformed the Ridge Club, in Sandwich, into a lush garden landscape using an array of seasonal flowers, tiki torches and mini lanterns. Guests dined on filet mignon and statler chicken breasts before indulging in the three tier marble wedding cake picked out by the groom. Chosen in memory of Doug's father, Stacey says, "It was extremely sentimental to have our reception at the Club." As a rainbow appeared out of a cloudless sky during a photo session on the beach, the newlyweds knew Doug's father was definitely with them in spirit on their special day. Another unexpected gift.

what an elegant cake! truly beautiful! but the question is, does it taste as wonderful as it looks?
(04.21.10 @ 02:46 PM)I think that the best cakes are customized ones which reflects the character of the couple. Although cakes should be simple and elegant looking, I also think that it's important that cake is designed according to the couple's will.
